Family: The Backbone of America

With the holidays quickly approaching, you can’t help but think about families across America sitting around the supper table or planning their annual Christmas card. The cool weather has finally (hopefully for good) set in and with it, giving everyone a sense of comfort knowing that the fall and winter months are in for the long haul. The fall and winter seasons allow everyone to stay indoors and enjoy each other’s company.

This is especially easy when Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner and you seemingly can’t forget the pumpkin pie that will accompany that fat turkey on the table (YUM!). The holidays allow us to spend time in the kitchen baking homemade bread with grandma, creating from scratch the perfect pecan pie for dad and preparing with your cousins and aunts the perfect tactics for Black Friday the following day. It’s times like these when family is near and dear to the soul, and you couldn’t imagine your life without the people who love you unconditionally.

Why does it warm our hearts to think about these upcoming events? Why do we get so giddy thinking about all 20 family members showing up at our home to sit around the table to gossip and make fun of each other? Why do we love to feed the masses and clean up the kitchen after a meal meant to feed an army? It’s because deep down, no matter how many of us want to deny it, we love the thought of family and even more family during the holidays. Yes, we all have our family drama and the black sheep of our families. But nothing beats a good belly laugh in the front room when Uncle Joe cracks a joke during the football game playing on Thanksgiving Day. No matter how crazy Uncle Joe might be, we love Uncle Joe because he’s been around forever, and he has always been there to crack those jokes.

It’s crucial that we continue to recognize how important our family is. A proverb stated that blood is thicker than water and essentially that means relationships and loyalties within a family are the strongest and most important ones. We should live our lives according to this proverb knowing that at the end of the day, it’s time to go home and be with the people who will never leave you and always love you, no matter what. Family has forever been the backbone of America, and in a day and age where divorce rates are higher than ever, marriage rates are lower than ever, and kids are over-involved with extracurricular activities, we must do everything we can to support the institute of the family.

There are good examples of stable families out there though! Chip and Joanna Gaines are one of America’s favorite couples. They opened their first Magnolia Market in Waco, Texas in 2003 to share their love of design with the world. After having their first two kids, they decided to close the business to spend more time at home and with the family. They began focusing on Magnolia Homes, the family’s construction business, and they firmly believed that they were “making Waco beautiful one home at a time.”

On May 23, 2013, the first episode of “Fixer Upper” aired on HGTV. The couple takes a home in an upscale neighborhood and uses their construction and design skills to revitalize it and make it a showplace. Combined, Chip and Joanna save homes that look hopeless, renovating the imperfect, and revealing them as what they were always intended to be. On Sept. 26, 2017, Joanna Gaines wrote a blog post on their Magnolia Market website announcing that season 5 of “Fixer Upper” would be their last. The couple decided to stop and recognize what is most important to them; their marriage and their family.

“This is just us recognizing that we need to catch our breath for a moment. Our plan is to take this time to shore up and strengthen the spots that are weak, rest the places that are tired and give lots of love and attention to both our family and our businesses.” –Joanna Gaines

What a wonderful example of talented, hard-working people who set aside their successful business to recognize what is important and close to their hearts. My hope is that at the end of my work day, I leave my work at work and go home to be with my family with 100% of my focus on them because that is what is important and that is what will be important for the rest of my life and the rest of your life.
